The Department of Biology at Boston University invites applications for Postdoctoral Associate/Lecturer (PAL) appointments starting September 1, 2023. These positions are designed for recent Ph.D. recipients planning to pursue academic positions that emphasize teaching, such as faculty positions at primarily undergraduate institutions or lecturer positions. Initial appointments are for one year, and typically renewed for 1-2 additional years based on satisfactory performance. The PAL position is a 12-month full time position.

Responsibilities are distributed between teaching and scholarship of the candidate’s choice. For the instructional component, the candidate will lead discussion sections and/or laboratories of undergraduate biology courses, as well as have the opportunity to develop and teach an undergraduate course in their area of expertise during the second year of their appointment. For the scholarship component, the candidate can choose to be involved in one of the following opportunities:

·        Laboratory Research: Research will be conducted in the laboratory of a faculty member in the department, with summers devoted primarily to research activities. Candidates should work with a potential PI to develop research plans. Additional information about our academic programs and research interests of faculty can be found at https://www.bu.edu/biology/. We are currently particularly interested in candidates with a marine biology focus, but all specialties are welcome to apply.

·        Curriculum Development/Pedagogical Research Initiatives: Curriculum development of current courses and/or conduct educational research in collaboration with course instructors. We are particularly interested in candidates with interest in the Learning Assistant Program or Introductory Biology. Candidates should reach out to Dr. Kathryn Spilios (kspilios@bu.edu) and Dr. Kale Hartmann (hartma@bu.edu) to discuss current opportunities and develop plans. 

Qualifications:

  • Early-career Ph.D. with degree in biology or related biomedical science, or biology education 
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Qualifications to teach introductory biology, human/mammalian physiology, and/or biochemistry laboratories are particularly desirable, but not required
  • Research/Curriculum Development plan compatible with one or more of the faculty in BU’s Department of Biology
