The new faculty member will conduct research in the area of child language acquisition; teach courses in acquisition and other areas at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; advise students at all levels; and help in overseeing the annual BU Conference on Language Development, http://www.bu.edu/bucld/. Successful candidates will also have a strong secondary specialization in one of the core areas of linguistic analysis. Expertise in computational modelling of language acquisition is strongly desirable, though not required. Requirements include a PhD in Linguistics in hand by the start date, a strong background in linguistic theory, and demonstrated excellence in teaching, advising, and research. These should include a cover letter, plus separate statements about research, teaching, and diversity/outreach activity, of not more than 2 pages each. Please also upload a curriculum vitae, documentation of success in teaching (e.g., complete sets of teaching evaluations, sample syllabi), and three selected publications. Three reference letters will be requested at a later stage in the process. For full consideration, applications should be complete by November 10, 2023.

Boston University is an AAU institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. We are proud that we were the first American university to award a PhD to a woman (1877) and that Martin Luther King Jr. received his PhD here (1955). The Linguistics Program is committed to the College of Arts & Sciences Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan (https://www.bu.edu/cas/about/diversity-inclusion-cas/) for building a diverse, inclusive, and accessible environment for all. Applications from women, minorities, and candidates from other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged. Recognizing that diversity of experience deepens the intellectual endeavor, we are dedicated to increasing the participation of all talented students, including those from underrepresented groups, in the study of language and are particularly interested in scholars who can contribute to the diversity and inclusiveness of the academic community, at BU and beyond, through their research, teaching, and service.

BU conducts a background check on all final candidates for certain faculty and staff positions. The background check includes contacting the final candidate’s current and previous employer(s) to ask whether, in the last seven years, there has been a substantiated finding of misconduct violating that employer’s applicable sexual misconduct policies. To implement this process, the University requires a final candidate to complete and sign the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” after execution of an offer letter.

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, military service, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition, or because of marital, parental, or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
