The Art, Art History and Visual Studies Department at Duke University seeks applicants for a full-time Assistant Professor of the Practice in Cinematic Arts.

The successful candidate will be a filmmaker with a portfolio of feature and/or short films completed with a noteworthy screening record (or potential for such a record) at film festivals or significant widely-recognized distribution platforms. The ideal candidate will engage in creative and innovative narrative, documentary and/ or hybrid film practices and have strong conceptual, theoretical and technical understandings. At Duke, the candidate will be responsible for teaching a wide-range of courses in her/his area of expertise from introductory to graduate level. Additionally, the candidate will advise capstone and distinction projects at the undergraduate level and thesis projects in the Duke MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts. A commitment to departmental service is expected.

We seek faculty members who bring a critical perspective to issues of diversity, multiculturalism and gender, and who will contribute to the global emphases of Duke’s Cinematic Arts curriculum. In this regard, international applicants are also encouraged to apply.

Cinematic Arts is a major concentration within the Art, Art History and Visual Studies department. The major integrates courses in film history, theory and practice, and interfaces with other majors in Art History, Visual Arts and Visual & Media Studies as well as with other departments at Duke who teach various national cinemas and theoretical approaches to the moving image. Additionally, there are close connections to the MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts and the Center for Documentary Studies.

Required Qualifications: An MFA (or relevant terminal degree) and a significant creative practice in film.
