Computational Modeling of Autonomic Neuromodulation

The Grill Lab at Duke University, Department of Biomedical Engineering seeks a highly-motivated individual to pursue neural engineering research in a highly supportive and collaborative environment. Our goal is to advance bioelectronic medicines: electrical stimulation, block, and recording of peripheral autonomic nerves for disease treatment and restoration of function. We have an NIH-funded SPARC project to develop, validate, and apply computer-based models of electrical stimulation and block of autonomic nerves, with complementary electrophysiology experiments. The successful applicant will support ongoing research by conducting literature reviews to inform computational studies and research questions, implementing novel biophysical computational models, designing and executing simulations, and analyzing and presenting data for reports and publications. They will also collaborate with and support team members as needed.

The successful applicant will:

• Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics or Computer Science

• Be a proficient programmer, with good coding habits; experience in Matlab, NEURON, git would be an asset

• Be familiar with neural biophysics and the fundamental principles of neural engineering

• Have research experience

• Have excellent informal and formal written and oral communication skills

• Be capable of balancing independent research progress with collaboration and team work, as appropriate
