A Research Scientist position is available in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in Professor Nimmi Ramanujams Lab.

The primary objectives of Professor Ramanujam’s research efforts are to engineer spectroscopic and imaging techniques for the quantitative assessment of molecular changes associated with oncogenesis and cancer progression, to develop novel treatment strategies for women’s cancer, and to use technologies developed in The Center for Global Women’s Health Technologies (GWHT) as educational tools. Your role will be to direct and lead Center related research initiatives. You will closely with fellow lab members, specifically graduate students and staff to develop and implement a variety of research techniques including device design, imaging processing, and the clinical translation of novel imaging strategies. Another main aspect of your position will be to manage human subjects protocols including the development and submission of all IRB protocols, annual renewals, amendments, safety events, deviations. You may additionally be asked to participate in implementation of clinical trials and mentoring lab members on data collection and analysis. You will be expected to devote effort to the identification of funding opportunities and lead grant writing and submissions. You will be expected to write at minimum two grants per year. You will be asked to dissemination your data in the form of publications, conferences proceedings, newsletters, sponsor progress reports, and internal meetings. You will mentor graduate and undergraduate students and provide project guidance and management, as well as provide critical review for student manuscripts and presentations. You will also be expected to prepare agendas and slide presentations and attend weekly Center meetings. In addition to administrative tasks, you will be responsible for managing the overall research directives of the Center. Dr. Nimmi Ramanujam will be your direct supervisor, however, you will also work closely with the Executive Director, Marlee Krieger.

The Center for Global Women’s Health Technologies and Dr. Ramaujam support the professional development of their employees. You will therefore be eligible to attend scientific conferences in which you present new and original work related to GWHT. GWHT will cover the cost of attending these conferences. Additionally, the Duke Learning Management System provides classes to help Duke employee’s build value skills and improve individual performances. GWHT will cover the expenses for your professional development as long as they are directly related to your career path and/or research. You must provide justification for the professional development course in advance.

This offer is contingent on the successful completion of a background check and upon the presentation of original evidence of appropriate employment eligibility on or before the start date outlined in this letter. After your hire, you will be required to attend a half-day Orientation for Duke University, sign a Confidentiality Agreement, and adhere to all policies and procedures throughout your term at Duke.

There will be a 90-day trial period during which time your performance will be evaluated. This period is a time for open communication between the supervisor and staff member concerning performance expectations and may be extended 30 days if necessary. Dr. Ramanujam will conduct a formal performance review on an annual basis. This review is generally conducted in April or May of each year and the rating will determine your merit increase.
