The Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, USA, is conducting a search for an Assistant or Associate Research Professor with expertise in Global Mental Health (GMH) to participate in research, education, and training efforts. We are especially interested in applicants with an intervention-focused program of research, which could include intervention development, adaptation, evaluation, and/or implementation science approaches to improve intervention delivery and access for sustainability and scale-up. Specific topics, populations, and contexts are flexible, though we will prioritize candidates who work in low- and middle-income countries and whose work is consistent with an interdisciplinary approach to research. To facilitate such work, DGHI has established Priority Partnership Locations across the globe, many of which have previously supported GMH research. 

Within the Duke Center for Global Mental Health, we highly value mentorship and teaching, and seek an applicant who is passionate about engaging in these activities alongside and integrated in their research. This faculty member would have the opportunity to directly mentor undergraduate students, often Global Health majors; graduate students in DGHI’s Master of Science in Global Health Program; medical students doing yearlong research projects; doctoral students from across the university; and postdoctoral scholars, to participate actively in their ongoing studies. The successful candidate would also have the opportunity to develop classes related to GMH to expand course offerings for students interested in pursuing this field, or to teach existing courses at DGHI. Lastly, we seek an applicant who is interested in taking an active role in developing our growing Center for Global Mental Health, to participate in vision-setting, strategic planning, and partnership development as we continue to expand our research and training efforts. 

This will be a full-time 9- or 12- month appointment based at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Research Professor. Initial rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The faculty member’s primary appointment will be within DGHI with the possibility of joint appointments in other Departments or Schools at Duke. In collaboration with candidates, we will identify Department(s) of best fit and pursue opportunities for a tenure-track joint appointment in another Department or School at Duke should that be of interest (as DGHI is not a tenure-granting entity). 

We are especially interested in applicants with a track record of extramural funding or a clear plan of research that is likely to lead to extramural funding in the near future. DGHI will provide initial salary support for this position with the expectation of transitioning to extramural grant funding and internal sources of funding (e.g., teaching, administrative roles) over time. The specific timeline will vary based on level at entry, the candidate’s current funding, and potential co-funding through other Duke entities through joint appointments. DGHI is dedicated to supporting the new faculty member to be successful in their transition to DGHI.

DGHI is dedicated to research and training in Global Mental Health to reduce disparities in treatment access in low-resource contexts. We have an established Center for Global Mental Health that serves as a hub to link interdisciplinary faculty and trainees across Duke, including Duke University and Duke Health. We have over 30 faculty members who integrate mental health into their interdisciplinary research and a pool of talented trainees at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels. Qualifications and Skills Required: • Doctoral or terminal degree (e.g., PhD, ScD, DrPH, MD) in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, psychiatry, nursing, global health, public health, health behavior, implementation science). • Experience conducting intervention-focused research in global mental health • Experience conducting research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) • A record of obtaining extramural research funding or a clearly articulated plan for obtaining extramural funding • A record of academic publishing • Perspectives and experiences that reflect a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and decolonization 

Preferred: • Clinical experience in mental health intervention delivery • Academic teaching experience • Experience supervising and mentoring trainees in a research capacity • Licensed or eligible for licensure as a mental health professional
