As part of a larger team, the Research Services Librarian provides innovative and dynamic instruction, which includes outreach activities to identify potential campus users of Rubenstein Library materials and working with faculty to design assignments and select materials for use in their courses. This position provides research and reference services through remote platforms, in-person consultations, and regular reading room shifts.

Responsibilities

·       RESEARCH SERVICES (40%): Conducts reference interviews and assists researchers in person and remotely; provides onsite reference services at the Rubenstein Library research services desk, including evening and weekend rotations.

·       INSTRUCTION (30%): Leads instruction sessions with primary sources, including evaluating and selecting materials, developing lesson plans, and collaborating with instructors on assignments and learning objectives; integrates understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into instruction; works with faculty and other campus partners to strengthen instructional and research collaborations across the university, and integrates Rubenstein Library collections and resources into new and existing classes and programs; partners with students, instructors, and other librarians to enhance learning, teaching, and research through critical engagement with library resources; promotes inclusive teaching practices and a commitment to accessibility in the development and delivery of services and programs; participates in the assessment of library programs, services, and collections use.

·       OUTREACH (15%): Establishes user-focused public programs and services, including collaborating with library colleagues and other campus and external organizations to publicize and promote use of the collections through tours, exhibitions, presentations, and other creative public programming and engagement initiatives.

·       COLLABORATION (10%): Participates actively in departmental planning meetings to set goals and priorities, develop policies, and maximize services to users; shares ideas for innovative and creative ways to meet service needs; works effectively with the group, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; actively contributes to library-wide initiatives; participates in departmental and library-wide activities; serves on library committees; may participate in the Rubenstein Library’s internship program, travel grant program, web editing, and/or social media.

·       PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (5%): Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest may be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and/or service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.

·       Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises one or more Research Services Reference Interns

Qualifications

Education:

Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program and/or an advanced degree from an accredited program in archives administration or equivalent experience. 

Experience:

Required: Familiarity with standard archival and library procedures; excellent planning, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; and demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and library users in a rapidly changing, service-oriented environment; ability to work effectively in a team environment; ability to communicate effectively with users and donors; interest in continued development of instructional tools and skills; demonstrated proficiency using computer based technology and ability to adapt to new technologies. 

Preferred:  At least two to three years’ experience providing archival reference and/or instruction; prior experience working in an academic research library; familiarity with anti-racist approaches to archival work; experience providing reference; commitment to active learning methods for library instruction. Reading knowledge of at least one Western language other than English (German, French, or Latin preferred).

Working Conditions

  • Routinely moves library materials weighing up to 40 pounds;
  • Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible;
  • Normal office environment;
  • Regular evening and weekend shifts required.

Salary and Benefits

Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; however, the anticipated range is $53,000-$68,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
