Position description: The Duke University Program in Dance seeks an outstanding professional with expertise in traditional and contemporary approaches to dance and choreography, actively engaged in a combination of movement practice, creative process, and theoretical inquiry. We seek a candidate who embraces 21st-century approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives to dance and contributes to the development of the undergraduate program as well as to the Duke MFA in Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinary Praxis. We seek an individual with established relationships in the professional field - nationally and internationally - who will continue the Program’s strong ties with the local community. Candidates with teaching and research experience that demonstrates work with a diverse student population will be valued. Candidate’s teaching and research should demonstrate contemporary concepts, pedagogy, and practices of inclusion, diversity, and equity.

Qualifications: MFA in Dance and/or Ph.D. with significant experience in dance artistry required. Familiarity with university teaching in undergraduate and graduate dance programs, significant professional performing experience, and a record of choreography in a professional and/or university setting will be preferred. Administrative experience in university settings will be highly valued.

Responsibilities: Our new colleague will teach courses at introductory to advanced levels of dance technique/practice and performance projects, broadly defined, for the concert stage, site-specific, or other venues at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will teach graduate level courses in choreography methodology; participate in interdisciplinary collaborations and/or investigations of the theoretical bases of a contemporary dance practice. Additional areas of teaching expertise could include but are not limited to interdisciplinary creative work, dance and technology, somatic practices, contemporary or traditional Latin, Africanist, Asian, Asian-Pacific, or European dance forms, ballet, jazz dance, modern dance forms, and popular/commercial dance forms.

Our new faculty will provide administrative leadership serving the undergraduate and graduate programs; engage in curriculum development and advising undergraduate and graduate students; assist with the production of dance events; cultivate interdisciplinary collaborations with arts and non-arts faculty, students, and other constituencies. Our new colleague will contribute to ongoing projects in dance as a researcher, artist and administrator; will pursue or maintain a national and international profile as an artist/researcher; and will be committed to contributing alongside the current faculty to enhance the Dance Program’s vision.

The Duke University Dance Program currently offers a BA and a minor in Dance and a MFA in Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinary Practice. The Dance Program is an independent unit within the University’s School of Arts and Sciences.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications.
