Occupational Summary
The Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at
Duke University is seeking to expand its pool of teaching-track faculty by hiring broadly within
mechanical engineering, materials science, and/or related fields. Adjunct Assistant Professors
teach up to two courses per semester, and no more than three per academic year. Appointments
are made on a per-semester basis.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in mechanical engineering, materials science, or allied
fields; is enthusiastic about teaching and learning; and has a track record of effective teaching at
the undergraduate and/or graduate level. This position is an excellent opportunity for those
interested in academia, offering the opportunity to obtain rigorous teaching experience prior to
embarking on their eventual career path. For some, it may represent an opportunity that allows
them to bring their industry experiences to the classroom while concurrently engaged in
real-world engineering. Screening of candidates will begin immediately until the position is
filled.
Work Performed
Teaching duties will consist of no more than three courses per year. Graduate and undergraduate
student mentorship and advisement is expected within the context of this course for projects
aligned with the core mission of the department. It is expected that externally-visible course
outcomes can be disseminated broadly. Scholarly activities outside the classroom are encouraged
including, but not limited to, industry collaborations, engineering education research, or other
similar outcomes. Interaction with industrial partners is strongly encouraged to provide practical
input to the program and provide sources for student internships.
Required Qualifications at this Level

evaluations are to be provided in application materials.
Skills
Skills vary according to the intended course(s). Candidates should provide a description of
relevant skills and experience with specific courses for which they would like to be considered.
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative and level of the types of duties
