The Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) is a Department of Energy Center of Excellence in Nuclear Physics. TUNL seeks to hire a full-time Associate in Research to work on the accelerator and light source development program at the High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source (HIGS). The hired Associate in Research will lead or participate in the following projects: (1) the development of optical diagnostic for orbital angular momentum laser beams; (2) the development of AI and machine-learning techniques for advanced gamma-ray beam diagnostics; (3) the development of the next generation Compton gamma-ray sources; and (4) to provide technical support for the operation of accelerators and light sources, including a linac preinjector, booster injector, and storage ring, as well as a storage ring free-electron laser and Compton gamma-ray source. Education and Experience Requirements * Requires a Ph.D. in accelerator physics or a related field * A strong working knowledge of charged particle accelerators, free-electron lasers, orbital-angular momentum beams, and/or laser beam diagnostics * Ability to develop laser beam diagnostics * Ability to develop high-level numerical methods and ability to apply AI and machine learning techniques to photon beam diagnostic and instrumentation problems * Computational skills in MATLAB, C/C++, or similar languages; * Willingness to learn the accelerator/light source operation and provide technical support Candidates are encouraged to apply by sending their resume, a statement of research plans, and two letters of recommendation.
