Call for Interdisciplinary Computational Postdoctoral Position at Duke

Hosts: Professors Hau-Tieng Wu and Jana Schaich Borg at Duke University

Description: We have an opening for a one-year postdoctoral position with option for renewal in the Department of Mathematics and Social Science Research Institute at Duke University that is potentially extendable up to 3 years. The focus of the position is on developing novel interpretable algorithms for identifying social interaction motifs and their typical temporal and hierarchical relationships during natural interactions using combinations of (a) dynamic network spatiotemporal time series analysis, (b) multiresolution analysis, and (c) alternating diffusion mapping. The postdoctoral position will also focus on analyzing a highly novel dataset of social interaction videos with associated behavioral outcomes. The applicant will be co-mentored in mathematical theory development, applied analysis, and job placement by Drs. Wu and Schaich Borg in a strongly interdisciplinary environment.

Training and skills required: Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in relevant fields like applied mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, (bio)statistics, or computational neuroscience by the start date of the postdoctoral appointment. Applicants must also have extensive experience with applied data analysis, strong practical coding skills (Matlab or Python is preferred), and at least some expertise in signal processing. Additional background with image processing or social science is ideal, but not required. Professionally, the applicant should demonstrate ability to work collaboratively with experts from different fields, manage their work schedule independently, and write academic publications efficiently.

Timeline: The postdoc could begin as early as October 2022, but could start later if needed (in particular, we are open to January 2023 start dates). The position will stay open until it is filled with an appropriate candidate.

Teaching: The position does not require any teaching, but teaching opportunities and teaching mentorship are available if the candidate is interested.

Contact: Interested applicants should contact Drs. Wu (hauwu@math.duke.edu) and/or Schaich Borg (js524@duke.edu) through email, and include a CV, statement of research interests, and names of three referees that can provide letters of recommendation in the future, if needed. We are strongly committed to a diverse academic environment and place high priority on attracting underrepresented candidates.
