The Department of Physics of the University of Helsinki invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher, starting in September 2022, or earlier by agreement, for a two year fixed-term period. The position is funded by the Academy of Finland for work on gravitational waves from the early universe, in collaboration with Mark Hindmarsh, Kari Rummukainen and David Weir.

The Department of Physics is co-located with the Helsinki Institute of Physics, and has a broad community of high energy physics, cosmology and astrophysics researchers. More information about the department can be found at ;

There are also close connections to the department of physics at the University of Sussex, and the possibility to spend extended periods there. Visits to Sussex will be hosted by the Theoretical Particle Physics research group, which in collaboration with the Astronomy Centre has a thriving research environment for early universe cosmology. More information about the Sussex research groups can be found at ;

We are seeking a junior researcher who will have obtained their PhD degrees by the start date, and whose research interests include gravitational waves from the early universe. Experience with computational methods will be especially valuable for the research areas, which include the dynamics of first order phase transitions, the computation of gravitational wave signals from phase transitions, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo estimation of model parameters from gravitational wave data.

The starting salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be ca. 3300–3700 euros/month, depending on the appointee's qualifications and experience. Furthermore, the University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development.

The University of Helsinki is the top academic institution in Finland and one of the top 100 academic institutions in the world: The international scientific community consists of 40,000 students and researchers. The Faculty of Science, located at the Kumpula campus, carries out research in physics, atmospheric sciences, geosciences, geography, chemistry, mathematics, statistics and computer science.

Finland is a member of EU, has high quality free schooling (also in English), generous family benefits and healthcare. For more information about working at the University of Helsinki and living in Finland, please see ;

The University of Helsinki welcomes applicants from all gender identities, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Applications should be received by 9th May 2022 to guarantee full consideration.
