Position Description:

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Biological Engineering/Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research – The Manalis Lab (MIT) in collaboration with the Polz Lab (recently moved from MIT to University of Austria) have a postdoc position opening that is at the interface of novel instrumentation for single cell analysis and environmental microbiology aimed at understanding how microbes grow in the ocean under varying spatial and temporal conditions. It is largely unknown how fast individual microbes grow under in situ conditions, how growth rates differ among groups of microbes and how they are modulated by ecological conditions. To address such questions, we have proposed to develop a single-cell based system that allows coupled measurement of in situ cell mass and growth rates with genomic characteristics. If successful, this project will facilitate understanding of the microbial contribution to environmental processes and the incorporation of these processes into ecological, biogeochemical and climate models. Our labs employ graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and technical staff with a range of scientific backgrounds from engineering to biology. Additional information is available at and The position will be based at MIT.

Job Requirements: a Ph.D. in engineering related field; experience in microfluidics/instrumentation and precision measurement is essential; some previous experience with cell culture is helpful. Must possess good problem solving and analytical skills and be deeply interested in harnessing engineering approaches to address fundamental questions in environmental microbiology. In addition to applying online, a cover letter, CV, and names and contact information for three references should be sent to Prof. Scott Manalis at
