Job Description

The Department of Malay Studies at NUS seeks to hire two tenure track assistant professors with a PhD in either the Social Sciences or the Humanities, one of whom will be on a joint appointment with the Department of Southeast Asian Studies. Candidates who have a strong track record with promising trajectory in research, publication and teaching in any one or a few of these areas are invited to apply: history, literature, globalization, politics, economy, religion, gender, population, migration, family, health, social services, digital culture, cultural politics and human-nature intersections.

Candidates should have area studies knowledge of the Malay world in Southeast Asia. A comparative approach and/or inter-disciplinary expertise on the Malay world and its connections with other regions will also be considered. Hires should have a commitment towards fostering a collegial and collaborative work culture.

Successful candidates are expected to take up the appointments by July 2022.

  • Concise statement of your research and publication plans (1-2 pages)
  • Concise statement of your teaching expertise and interests in the field of Malay World/Southeast Asian Studies, as well as possible courses you are able to offer to raise the profile of the two departments (1-2 pages)
  • Concise statement describing your personal qualities and prior experience in collaborative and leadership roles in academic and community engagements (1-2 pages)
  • Evidence of teaching experience (course reviews, sample syllabi, teaching awards).
  • Two to three writing samples or thesis chapters
  • A list of three external referees (names, contact details and applicant’s relationship to them.

Application Timeline
