INTRODUCTION

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut seeks to fill a one-year visiting position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory and mid-level undergraduate courses in cultural anthropology, with the possibility of some advising or administrative service. They may teach introductory courses including Peoples and Cultures of the World and Social Anthropology; methods courses such as Cultural Research; and elective courses such as Peoples and Cultures of North America, Contemporary Native Americans, People of the Pacific Islands, Peoples and Cultures of the Middle East, Anthropology of the African Diaspora, or a course in Ethnographic Methods. Preference will be given to candidates who have research and/or teaching interests in cultural anthropological theories and methods.

The Department of Anthropology is located on the main University of Connecticut campus in Storrs, Connecticut. It offers undergraduate and graduate training, with internationally recognized strengths in medical anthropology, human rights, archaeology, and biocultural anthropology. Research, teaching, and advocacy in the Department seek to understand the creation and maintenance of social inequities while simultaneously identifying ways to reduce or eliminate them.

Founded in 1881, UConn is a Land Grant and Sea Grant institution and member of the Space Grant Consortium. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology at the time of the hiring
  • Demonstrated excellence teaching cultural anthropology to undergraduate students
  • Demonstrated excellence teaching large format introductory level courses
  • Experience teaching issues that concern diversity and inequality

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expertise in either collaboration-based, antiracist, or decolonial teaching practices
  • Experience teaching writing-intensive courses
  • Ability to teach courses in Intersectional-Indigenous Studies (The Americas and the Pacific), the Middle East, Africa, the African diaspora, and/or cultural research methods.
  • Deep commitment to innovation and professional development in pedagogy integrated-research.
  • Experience teaching and/or mentoring first-generation, non-traditional, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) college students.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track position. The teaching load for this position is seven 3-credit courses per year, or the equivalent. The anticipated start date is August 23, 2022.  The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
