Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) is a prestigious private university in Chile. It was founded initially as a business school in 1953 and became a full university in 1989. It is named on the entrepreneur that donated the funds for its creation. At present it has 9,000 students (70% undergraduate), 250 full time professors and four campuses: two in Santiago, one in Viña del Mar and another in Miami, Florida. It has eight schools: Business, Engineering and Sciences, Law, Psychology, Journalism, Government, Design and Liberal Arts. It ranks fifth among all universities in Chile and first among private universities. UAI launched an undergraduate industrial engineering program in 1989. In 1996 it founded the Faculty of Science and Technology, which was renamed as Faculty of Engineering and Sciences (FES) in 2007. The vision evolved then from being a “school of industrial engineering” to become a full “faculty of engineering and sciences” involved not only in teaching, but also in research and transfer of technology to society. UAI authorities decided that engineering should be a core discipline in the development strategy of the university, as business had been until then. By 2010 a Strategic Plan had been designed and approved aiming to position FES as one of the leading engineering schools in Chile, operating in the Santiago and Viña del Mar campuses. Massive efforts and investment have resulted in rapid growth. At present FES has 2,500, undergraduate students, 250 graduate students, 80 full time professors, 18 teaching and research laboratories, 6 bachelor and engineering programs, 9 master programs and 3 doctoral programs. This rapid evolution has positioned FES as a leading school of engineering in Chile and now it aims to achieve international recognition. Bachelor programs are offered in the following fields: industrial engineering, information technologies (computer sciences), energy and environment, bioengineering, civil engineering and mining. Master programs are offered in: industrial engineering, management sciences, information technologies, energy and environment, bioengineering, financial engineering, technological management and entrepreneurship, regulation of utilities, and complexity sciences. Doctoral programs are offered in industrial engineering, engineering of complex system (interdisciplinary program) and financial engineering. Research covers most of the fields involved in the study programs and takes place in specialized centers. At present the research centers are the following: UAI Systems, UAI Tech, UAI Earth, UAI Mining, UAI Bio, UAI Built, UAI Complexity, Center for Ecotoxicology of Metals and Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology.
