The University of Arizona seeks an exceptional leader to serve as dean for the Eller College of Management.  Located in Tucson, Arizona, the University of Arizona is one of the nation’s premier public research universities, a member of the AAU, and a land-grant university committed to diversity, with more than 40,000 students enrolled in 18 colleges and schools.  The University ranks among the top 20 in research and development expenditures among public universities, with $650 million in federal funding.  One of the largest colleges within the university, the Eller College of Management is highly-regarded for its academic programs and regularly ranked among the top twenty public colleges of business; several of its programs are ranked within the top ten nationally. The College seeks a dean who will build on Eller’s proud history as an elite business college performing frontier research; training undergraduates, masters and Ph.D. students; and identifying emerging areas of significant importance and developing them into points of excellence.

The Eller College of Management inhabits McClelland Hall, its 180,000-square foot home on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, as well as Executive and Evening MBA programs at the UA’s Biomedical Campus in downtown Phoenix. The College offers undergraduate, MBA, professional master’s, and doctoral degrees, and currently serves 5,800 undergraduate and 700 graduate students. In addition to traditional delivery, the College currently offers MBA and master’s of MIS degrees online. The College comprises six strong academic departments (Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management and Organizations, Management Information Systems, and Marketing), the McGuire Entrepreneurship program, and a number of research centers and laboratories.  The College has an annual operating budget of $54 million and generates approximately $5 million annually in funded research. The College is a key part of the University’s capital campaign, Arizona NOW, with a fundraising goal of $65 million.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and serves as its chief executive officer, providing inspirational leadership and strategic vision consistent with UA’s top-tier research rating and national reputation for leadership in research, education, and outreach. The dean must exhibit leadership in the pursuit of excellence in the academic programs, including enhancing student recruiting and placement of graduates. The next dean will be expected to lead significant strategic fundraising efforts; to create and realize financial resource flows within the university based on the set of students the College services; and to serve as a fair and active advocate for all academic departments.  Familiarity with Responsibility Centered Management (RCM) budget models, new modes of for-credit educational delivery systems such as digital and hybrid digital and in-person platforms, and the development of continuing education for business professionals would be desirable. The dean leads an administrative team consisting of a vice dean and associate deans of undergraduate and MBA programs as well as development/marketing/alumni staff, and works closely with a National Board of Advisors. To succeed, the new dean will build and maintain productive relationships with this Board, business, government, foundations, alumni, donors, rankings venues and others; develop partnerships with other colleges within the University; and represent the College to its many constituencies within and beyond the campus. Additionally, the dean will build on the College’s strong emphasis on diversity.

The University seeks a candidate of exceptional leadership and vision to continue to build momentum for the College.  To be considered, candidates must have a doctorate or equivalent in business, economics or related field; scholarly accomplishments corresponding to the rank of tenured full professor; at least five years of demonstrated managerial and leadership experience; demonstrated commitment to the mission of a comprehensive, “very high research activity” university and business school; and demonstrated success in external fundraising development/external relations with the necessary energy and ability to work effectively with the business community, donors, alumni and other constituents in resource development and advancement.  Preferred qualifications include a proven track record as dean of a college or leader of a large academic unit; demonstrated excellence in instruction, research and service; and demonstrated success in advancing diversity among faculty, students, staff and external stakeholders.  Candidates will be expected to demonstrate personal and professional integrity, fair and just decision making, keen intellectual capacity and creativity, strategic focus, and exceptional collegiality, with an open and persuasive approach to communication, ability to operate within a complex environment and to collaborate with multiple stakeholders.  Other necessary qualities include a commitment to an environment of shared governance and participatory decision making; exceptional management skills as demonstrated by financial, administrative and team skills; exceptional listening skills and communication ability; a passion for communicating the vision and mission of the College; and an entrepreneurial and innovative attitude and orientation.
