The Department of Food Science at Cornell seeks an individual that will develop a strong research and teaching program in food safety and/or food microbiology that is complementary to existing programs in the department. Candidates with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds (not just food science) and research and teaching interests in any area of food safety and food microbiology (e.g., molecular food safety and food microbiology, food virology or mycology, pathogenesis of foodborne diseases, physiology and genomics of food associated microorganism, mathematical modeling and risk assessment related to food safety or microbiology) are encouraged to apply. Cornell has an existing strong research, teaching, and outreach program in food microbiology and food safety, which stretches across different departments and colleges, including strong collaborations with a variety of industry partners and government organizations. Existing strength and expertise in food safety and food microbiology will help the new faculty recruited for this position develop a strong and nationally and internationally recognized research program in a supportive and collaborative environment. 

Position Description and Responsibilities: 

This tenure-track position requires a balanced effort between research (50%) and teaching (50%) on a 9-month academic year basis. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and direct an innovative, externally funded research program in any areas relevant to food microbiology and food safety that will attract graduate students, post docs and strategic collaborators. Specific potential areas of focus for this position could include (but are not limited to) novel technologies to control microbial hazards; studies of the molecular biology or molecular ecology of microbial pathogens and other food associated microorganisms; pathogenesis of foodborne diseases, predictive microbiology and modeling of foodborne disease and spoilage organism transmission; scientific basis for risk management strategies. 

Preference is for this position to be filled at the Assistant Professor level, but more senior applicants will be considered. 

The successful candidate has the chance to participate in university-wide initiatives and centers such as New York State Food Safety Center of Excellence or the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future. Collaboration within and outside the department is encouraged and expected. 

Teaching responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in food microbiology and/or safety. The typical teaching expectation of a 50% teaching appointment would be two courses per year, but incumbents typically have a reduced teaching load in their first year. Participation in other related courses (e.g., as a guest lecturer) may also be expected. The incumbent will also be expected to advise undergraduate students and mentor M.P.S. (Master of Professional Studies), M.S., and Ph.D. students. The candidate will also be expected to participate in faculty meetings, departmental and university committees, and related service activities appropriate to faculty members. 

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Food Microbiology, Microbiology, Biological or Chemical Engineering, Molecular Biology, or related field. Applicants are not required to have a prior background in food science, but relevant teaching, postdoctoral and/or industry experience are desirable.
