POSITION FUNCTION The Western NY Field Crops and Livestock IPM Specialist will provide training and demonstrations of new and established IPM practices to maintain high-level skills; promote high-level IPM implementation and adoption by growers; conduct applied on-farm IPM research; create IPM resources; evaluate IPM adoption and impact; and provide leadership, support and planning for IPM education and outreach in collaboration with Field Crop and Livestock Extension programs in western New York State. This position will benefit from multidisciplinary knowledge including, but not limited to, the disciplines of entomology, veterinary entomology, plant pathology, weed science, and agronomy. The New York State Integrated Pest Management Program (NYSIPM) is a nationally recognized leader in the development and promotion of IPM practices. IPM is an approach to managing pests that considers human health, the environment and economics while managing pests of field crops and livestock (primarily dairy and beef cattle) in New York. NY is ranked #3 nationally in milk production, and first in specialty dairy products such as yogurt, cottage cheese and sour cream. There are 620,000 dairy cattle and 110,000 beef cattle. Field crops (e.g. corn, soybean, and alfalfa), mainly grown to feed these cattle, comprise approx. 90% of the total crop land harvested in NY.  

KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE WORK OF THIS POSITION • Knowledge of philosophy, principles, and theory of IPM. • Knowledge of principles, theory, and research in Field Crop and Livestock IPM. • Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, conduct and evaluate informal adult education programs, in conjunction with the NYSIPM Program Director. • Demonstrated ability to teach adults. • Demonstrated ability to define, conduct, and interpret applied research/demonstration projects. • Demonstrated ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts. • Demonstrated ability to utilize electronic technology in daily work effort. • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to co workers, advisors, community and professional leaders, and targeted audiences. • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written, and visual channels. • Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and supervise staff. • Initiative, scientific creativity, ability to problem-solve, and reliability. 

EDUCATION Required Masters Degree in Plant Pathology, Entomology, Veterinary Entomology Pest Management, Weed Science or a closely associated field. Two or more years of related work experience. Desired Course work in Horticulture, Soil Science, Economics, Education, and Communication. Familiarity with online education and social media. Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Entomology, Pest Management, Weed Science or closely associated field. 

EXPERIENCE Required Two or more years of practical/relevant work experience in IPM, plant pathology, entomology, weed science, veterinary entomology, agronomy, wildlife biology or Cooperative Extension; OR experience in these areas as a graduate student. Must possess agricultural experience with ability to relate to routine farm situations. Desired Four to five years of professional leadership and practical/relevant work experience in in IPM, Plant Pathology, entomology, weed science, veterinary entomology, agronomy, Wildlife Biology or Cooperative Extension. Work experience in conducting, interpreting, evaluating and communicating the results of applied research. Extensive professional work experience in crop production, pest management, Cooperative Extension, or in developing informal educational programs.
