Position Description:

The Astrophysics Group (www.sissa.it/ap) of the International School for Advanced Studies of Trieste (SISSA, Italy) will have openings for postdoctoral positions to start in March 2018 at the earliest. The positions are for 2 years, with the possibility of extension for 1 more year depending on availability of funds and performance. SISSA is a multidisciplinary PhD school, unique in Europe, pursuing research in the areas of physics, mathematics and neuroscience and is located close to the main scientific institutions of the region (ICTP, Trieste University and the Trieste Observatory).  The Astrophysics Group currently consists of 10 staff members, 5 postdocs and 20 PhD students (www.sissa.it/ap/people.php).

Our research interests include: galaxy formation and evolution along with preparatory work for radio (SKA) and large-scale structure surveys (Euclid), physics of galaxy groups and clusters, dark matter, Galactic and extra-Galactic black holes, stellar structure and evolution, high-energy astrophysics, relativistic astrophysics, analysis and interpretation of cosmic microwave background data (Planck, LSPE, PolarBear/Simons Array, Simons Observatory, LiteBird) and those from (sub-)mm surveys (Herschel, ALMA), early universe physics and gravitation theory. See www.sissa.it/ap/research/research.php and www.sissa.it/ap/research/projects.php for a complete list of ongoing research projects at SISSA.

We welcome applications from all candidates whose research interests overlap with or complement those of the members of our group. The selected candidates are expected to be strongly involved in the scientific activities of the group,  also allocating reasonable time for their own independent research. There are no compulsory teaching duties, though selected candidates are encouraged to contribute to the training of Ph.D. students, to deliver monographic lessons within the Astrophysics PhD courses, and to organize group activities such as journal club and seminars. SISSA also offers local super-computing  resources (www.sissa.it/announcement/new-supercomputer-called-ulysses) and access to international ones. All of our scientific activity is carried out in English (as is the administrative support) and we provide local assistance for all members: a housing office, Italian classes, a nursery for children of SISSA members and a gym.

For further information about scientific activities you can contact Carlo Baccigalupi (bacci@sissa.it) or Andrea Lapi (lapi@sissa.it); for questions related to the details of the applications you can contact Lorena Bencina via email: bencina@sissa.it. Completed applications should be received no later than December 17th, 2017.
