The Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), is the Graduate Center’s University-wide venture that elevates CUNY’s legacy of scientific research and education through initiatives in five distinctive, but increasingly interconnected disciplines: environmental sciences, nanoscience, neuroscience, photonics, and structural biology. The ASRC is designed to promote a unique, interdisciplinary research culture with researchers from each of the initiatives working side by side in the ASRC’s core facilities, sharing equipment that is among the most advanced available. ASRC seeks a Research Associate in the Neuroscience Initiative who will conduct innovative academic research on glial biology conducted in connection with CUNY programs. The incumbent will lead research efforts related to the characteristics of the functions of glial cells in physiological and pathological conditions. This position reports to the Director of the Neuroscience Initiative.

Duties include but are not limited to: - Develops novel research tools and protocols and participates in acquisition of data for grant proposal and research papers; - Conducts research experiments and contributes to the development of new research methods and protocols, enhancing the direction of the project; - Collects and analyzes all tissue culture reagents and of cell culture stocks using liquid nitrogen; obtains certifications and necessary permits; - Uses primary cultures of glial cells and sorted cell population, single cell isolation, FACS, culture and co-culture, slice culture of glia and neurons; - Initiates new protocols and implements current ones for primary glial and neuronal cultures from rodents, fluorescent activated sorting of cells (FASC), and slice cultures from different brain regions; - Responsible for biological validation of novel biosensors and epigenome modulations in collaboration with nanotechnology and structural biology; - Collaborates with undergraduate and graduate students, providing guidance and ensuring that adequate protocols are being followed and proper reagents are being used; - Performs other duties as assigned.

General Duties:

- Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.

- Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding.

- Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data.

- Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings.

- Collaborates with internal and external colleagues.

- Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

Other Qualifications:

A preferred candidate should have: - Ph.D. in specific research areas (e.g., Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, Developmental Biology) preferred. - Proven track record of peer reviewed publications in high quality journals. - Interest in glial biology, metabolism, and epigenetics. - Experience in sterile tissue culture techniques and soft wares related to quantification and data management, including statistical analysis. - Experience in an experimental area related to glial cell biology and working with new technologies. - Previous experience in on CRISPR technology and chemogenetic on optogenetic approaches. - Ability to collaborate and be a team player and to work independently. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
