DNA, Biometrics, and Immigration policy

We seek a highly motivated and collaborative postdoctoral law scholar to join an interdisciplinary laboratory (the Farahany Science, Law, and Policy Laboratory- SLAP Lab), which conducts research on the legal, ethical, and policy issues arising from developments in genomics, neuroscience, and novel technologies (artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and more) at Duke University, led by Nita Farahany, JD, PhD, in the Duke Initiative for Science & Society and Duke Law School.

The postdoctoral fellowship is intended for individuals with a law degree (JD) who are interested in ethical and legal implication of use of biometrics data (and particularly DNA), by immigration authorities, law enforcement, and courts for identification. This fellowship is renewable on an annual basis for up to three years. The fellow will be involved in a large-scale project supported by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).

The fellow will analyze legal precedents, statutes, both domestically and internationally pertinent to DNA, biometric and immigration policy. They will prepare manuscripts and presentations for national and international meetings. This work will be embedded in SLAP Lab with a vertically-integrated team of collaborators, on a project led by Dr. Nita Farahany and Sara Katsanis, MS.
