Position Summary:

A full-time Research Scientist position is available in an organic environmental chemistry laboratory managing the Analytical Chemistry Core of the Duke’s Superfund Research Center. Primary tasks include analysis of environmental samples for organic contaminants, developing sample processing and analytical methods for organic compounds in a variety of matrices, assisting researchers and students within the Center with chemistry-related research needs, and contributing to presentation and publication of research findings.

Tasks and Skills:

  • Coordinating analytical chemistry requests from the various projects within the center
  • Operation and maintenance of analytical instrumentation (accelerated solvent extractors, automated solid-phase extraction systems, gas chromatography-mass spectrometers, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometers, and high resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometers)
  • Ordering and maintaining an inventory of supplies for the laboratory
  • Overseeing daily tasks of technician/s within the Core
  • Sample preparation techniques including solvent extraction, column chromatography, solid phase extraction
  • Data Analysis
  • Preparation of scientific publication and presentations
Qualifications:

Education: M.S. with several years of experience, or PhD in environmental or analytical chemistry

Experience: Strong gas and/or liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry experience; experience with preparation of environmental samples for chemical analysis and developing methods for sample preparation; experience in analyzing data and scientific writing

Computer Skills: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, chromatography software, statistical packages
