Assistant Research Scientist – Nuclear Engineering - College of Engineering

The Applied Nuclear Physics Lab in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Research Scientist, in the area of Nuclear Science, Nuclear Engineering or in a closely related field. The candidate will perform work under Professor Kai Vetter.

Appointment Length: This is a full-time, one-year position at 100% and is renewable for a second year depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Anticipated start date is June 2018.

Responsibilities: - Lead research and development of advanced radiation detection and imaging concepts as well as multi-sensor fusion technologies and systems relevant for national security, health, and basic sciences. - Support ongoing research efforts at UC Berkeley and LBNL. - Supervise undergraduate and graduate students in the design and execution of experiments, data analysis, reporting, and technical presentations. - Foster collaborations across disciplines and institutions. - Publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Basic Qualifications (At time of application): • PhD or equivalent degree in Nuclear Science or Nuclear Engineering

Additional Qualifications (By Start Date): • A minimum of five years of relevant experience. • Broad experience with radiation detection and multi-sensor systems, including the design, set up, and execution of experiments. • Demonstrated knowledge in data and signal processing from radiation and complementary detectors such as environmental or contextual sensors. • Proven record conducting independent research and summarizing scientific data for publication and presentation; effective communication skills. • Successful supervision of students. • Knowledge in computer vision and image processing • Knowledge in machine learning concepts

Preferred Qualifications: • Expertise in machine vision techniques and image processing. • Expertise in machine learning concepts.

Salary: The full-time annual salary will be $93,200 - $98,000.
