The Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy at Duke University has an opening for a Research Director to direct a portfolio of high-value care initiatives. Reporting to the Duke-Margolis Deputy Director, Policy, the Research Director will be responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of projects related to advancing health care reforms and new models of care at the Federal and state level, including engagement with states, the Federal government, and private-sector initiatives.

The Research Director will interact regularly with external project sponsors and collaborators, including government agencies, academic centers, advocacy organizations, medical product manufacturers, and health care organizations. He/she will collaborate with Duke-Margolis leadership and manage the day-to-day implementation of multiple projects to ensure the successful execution of project objectives and the Center’s strategic goals. The work site for this position will be the Duke-Margolis offices in Durham, NC, and would require some travel to Washington, DC to coordinate with Center faculty and staff.

Education/Experience Requirements: • Educational attainment and work experience that meets one of the following: o Advanced degree (e.g., MD, PhD, PharmD, JD) and at least five years of relevant work experience, OR o Master’s degree in health policy, health economics, public health, or other relevant field and ten or more years of relevant work experience.

• Graduate (MA-level or higher) degree in a field related to health policy, health care management, or health economics preferred. • At least 4 years of experience in a position of comparable experience and responsibility preferred. • Proven ability to plan and organize content with attention to detail and creativity. • Proven ability to write business documents and plans. • Professional and assertive with a positive approach to working in a team environment and demonstrated proficiency in managing teams to achieve project objectives. • Experience in a fast-paced office setting, preferably in a government, non-profit, or policy/political organization. • Experience and demonstrated knowledge in several of the following areas is preferred: health care payment reform and new models of care, Medicare and/or Medicaid, state health policy, and methods for evaluation of payment and other policy reforms.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements: • Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access). • Strong organization, high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, discretion, poise, and mature judgment. • Ability to interact and manage relationships with high-ranking individuals and complex organizations. • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with varied responsibilities. • Flexibility to work in the evenings, early mornings, and on weekends, if required. • Ability to travel 10%.
