SLAC Research Associate Positions in HPS and Dark Sectors

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking applicants for two experimental Research Associate positions to work in the area of accelerator-based searches for Dark Forces and Dark Matter. SLAC has several leading roles in the Heavy Photon Search (HPS) experiment, an accelerator-based search for a hidden sector photon being conducted at Jefferson Lab, and in the development of future searches for Dark Sectors and Light Dark Matter using compact, technologically aggressive detectors and intense electron beams.

HPS is producing physics results from data taken during engineering runs in 2015 and 2016 and preparing for longer physics runs in 2019 and beyond. The successful candidates will be expected to have significant experience in instrumentation and/or physics analysis and take on key roles in the experiment in one or both areas. These roles include important responsibilities in upgrading the Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) to boost the experiment’s reach, re-commissioning and operating the SVT and SVT DAQ in 2019, calibrating the SVT with data, improving track and event reconstruction, and conducting physics analysis to explore key parameter space for dark forces.

SLAC also plays a central role in developing the Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) proposal to search for Dark Matter production in fixed-target electron-nuclear scattering using a missing momentum approach. The candidates will have opportunities to help develop LDMX and potentially other experiments in Dark Sector physics during extended appointments.

For further information about the SLAC positions, please contact Dr. Timothy Nelson (tknelson@slac.stanford.edu).

Qualifications: As a part of the general research associate program at SLAC, these are highly competitive positions and require a background of demonstrated excellence in research and a recent PhD in experimental particle physics. The initial appointments are for two years, with the strong possibility of extension for additional years upon satisfactory performance.

How to apply: Interested candidates should submit the following information online at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/11244.

- Letter of application indicating your interest in the positions

- Curriculum vitae

- Selected bibliography that highlights personal contributions

- Research Statement

- Three letters of reference (to be submitted by reference writers at this site).

Processing of applications for these positions will begin on July 1, 2018. The positions will be open until filled.
