Campus Specific Information:

The Xi Chen research group at the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) at the Graduate Center of The City University of New York is looking for a highly motivated and independent postdoctoral Research Associate to work on functional materials (especially water-responsive materials) and our newly developed evaporation energy harvesting techniques. This position reports to Professor Xi Chen. The minimum duration of this position is 12 months, with possibility of extension subject to the fiscal ability of the University. The ASRC boasts state-of-the-art shared core facilities, including: a Class100 cleanroom; Imaging, Surface Science, NMR, MS, and MRI facilities, and; a shared vivarium space.

Professor Xi Chen’s Research Laboratory ( at the ASRC develops the next generation of sensors, actuators, energy conversion and storage devices by using novel nanostructured and bio-inspired functional materials. Their recent work on water-responsive materials and evaporation-driven engines opens up a new field in energy harvesting and provides opportunities towards solving current challenges in sustainable energy, energy storage, clean water, robotics, and medical technologies.

Duties include but are not limited to: - Conducts experimental research in the area of functional materials. - Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data. - Writes up research findings for progress reports and publications, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminates results as appropriate in leading peer reviewed journal publications and presentations at national and international conferences. - Collaborates with internal and external academic colleagues, and participates in knowledge exchange activities to establish research links with industry. - Provides day-to-day mentoring of undergraduate and graduate student projects in the laboratory, giving advice to students and supervising practical work. - Conducts individual and/or collaborative research, and contributes to the development of new research methods and ideas, giving direction to the project. - Assists in the development and planning of research objectives for specific projects, and contributes to the development of research objectives as part of the wider research program within the group, with guidance from the academic supervisor, as appropriate; - Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties. - Performs other related duties as assigned.

General Duties:

- Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others. - Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding. - Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data. - Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings. - Collaborates with internal and external colleagues. - Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

Other Qualifications:

A preferred candidate should have: - Experience in developing functional or bio-inspired materials. - Training in chemical characterizations (such as FTIR, XRD, XPS, and NMR), nanoscale material characterizations (such as AFM, SEM, and TEM), or micro or nano fabrication in a cleanroom environment. - Ability to communicate research results in high quality journals. - Previous publications of research results in high-quality journals.
