Position Description:    

Vacuum Scientist, Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education Research Associate

The Vacuum Scientist at Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE), will join the Vacuum Group responsible for maintaining and improving the vacuum systems of high energy particle accelerators and X-ray beamlines, consisting of an electron-positron storage ring and its injectors (a Synchrotron and a Linac) and seven narrow gap insertion devices and X-ray beamline sectors, and participate in R&D efforts in developing vacuum systems capable of extreme high vacuum (XHV) for the Cornell Energy Recover Linac (ERL) project. These projects present a considerable technical challenge and an opportunity to participate in the design and fabrication of vacuum systems using innovative UHV and XHV concepts. CLASSE maintains a well-equipped Vacuum Lab with a staff of trained vacuum technicians.

Responsibilities: • Conduct research into materials, processes and equipment for improving the existing vacuum systems; develop and design vacuum systems and instrumentation for several cutting-edge research projects. • Evaluate new design concepts, surface preparation and treatment. • Assistant in improving accelerator performance and further training of technicians.

Minimum Requirements: Ph.D. in a field of science or engineering with 3 years of experience in vacuum science. Capable of adapting to the changing needs of a research environment. Able to receive direction and to communicate effectively across all research groups in the laboratory. Must work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment.

Preferred Requirements: Experience with accelerators and/or delicate vacuum systems. Excellent communication (written & oral), interpersonal, leadership, analytical, and organizational skills. Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines, handling sensitive, confidential material with discretion and tact. Commitment to continuous learning.
