The DevLab@Duke has two openings for Pre/Post-Doctoral fellows working on an innovative project that combines machine learning and forecasting with coordinated, cross-country field experiments. The project aims to understand and forecast democratic breakdowns with an eye toward defending civil society against repression.

One pre/postdoc will focus on collecting, managing and analyzing field data from local partners and interventions aimed at promoting robust civil societies. Excellent data skills, a field experimental orientation, and capacity to work with partners in the international development industry are a must. The other pre/postdoc will focus on scraping data, natural language processing, and building machine learning models to predict regime backsliding. Additional experience with visualization would be desirable, as would a background in both python and R.

Prospective candidates are expected to have done graduate work in one or more of these areas: •International Development •Economics •Political Science •Statistics •Computer Science Successful candidates will collaborate with Professors Scott de Marchi and Erik Wibbels, as well other members of the DevLab in an interdisciplinary environment. They will be expected to work with lab associates to provide timely input to development practitioners affiliated with the DevLab —including donors, implementers and evaluators—at all stages of project conceptualization, design, implementation and evaluation. DevLab activities will leave considerable time for independent research, and the position offers ample opportunity for developing new research projects in conjunction with DevLab members.
