Occupational Summary

Conduct independent research activities under the guidance of Keisha Bentley-Edwards, Assistant Professor in General Internal Medicine and Associate Director of Research for the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity in preparation for a full time academic or research career. Funding for the position is contingent on NIH approval.

Work Performed

The Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity postdoctoral associate will work on the NIH-funded project, Religion, Spirituality and CVD Risks: A Focus on African Americans. In particular, the postdoctoral associate’s research focus with be at the intersection of race, religion, culture, community and medicine You will be working with Dr. Keisha Bentley-Edwards, Principal Investigator, and other members of the research team to compile and analyze data collected from the Add Health survey, Jackson Heart Study and National Survey of American Life data sets, focus groups and interviews, as well as surveys obtained from the consultants working on the project. You will assist in training community facilitators, co-author manuscripts and present those papers at various professional conferences. This postdoctoral position is for the current academic year of 2018-2019. Compliance with all applicable University and departmental policies and procedures. Required

Qualifications at this Level

Ph.D. in social sciences related discipline or closely related field Experience working with religious and community-based organizations

Preferred Qualifications

Flexible, collaborative and respectful style

Experience conducting qualitative interviews and focus groups

Excellent knowledge of issues related to health disparities

Experience working across a diverse range of social science projects focused on inequality

The Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity is a research collaborative located at Duke University. Its mission is the comparative, cross-national investigation of inter-group disparities and the assessment of existing policies and design of new policies to eliminate such disparities. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, Center scholars not only address the overarching social problem of general inequality, but also explore social problems associated with group-based (gender, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation and identity) disparities and conflict.
