Schmid College of Science and Technology (SCST) at Chapman University seeks applicants for a non-tenure track, full-time Instructional Assistant Professor of Physics, effective August 2019.

The Physics program prides itself on personalized education, small class sizes, innovative teaching methods, and direct student-faculty mentorship. Faculty pursue strong independent research programs and benefit from colocation with the internationally recognized Institute for Quantum Studies, founded by the National Medal of Science winner Prof. Yakir Aharonov ( Instructional faculty play a critical role in the program for teaching, pedagogy, advising, and service, have the opportunity for promotion to associate and full instructional professor, and have full voting power at both the program and college levels.

Requirements include a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field.

Preferred qualifications include:

• Broad training in physics. Specifically experience with both designing and teaching introductory physics courses and laboratories using evidence-based instructional approaches.

• Demonstrated ability to teach fundamental physical concepts to a broad audience with diverse prior backgrounds, and inspire scientific curiosity.

• Interest in student mentorship, building student community, and assisting with student outreach.

• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

The successful candidate will teach lectures and laboratory sections in the introductory physics sequences, with a focus on the PHYS107/108 sequence of “Physics for the Life Sciences.” They successful applicant will also help coordinate laboratories for all introductory sequences. In this role, they will help assess the laboratory curriculum, modify and develop new labs as appropriate, and coordinate part-time instructors. The applicant is expected to be an active participant in program activities and engage with the vibrant community of physics faculty and students.
