The Department of Statistical Science at Duke University is hiring a Postdoctoral Associate to work under the direction of Professor Alan Gelfand (with Dr. Robert Schick in the Nicholas School). The project is joint with St. Andrews University in Scotland and enjoys up to three years of funding for the position. The project itself is exceptionally challenging. We attempt to understand whale behavior in response to received sonar sound levels. As a result, we have challenges with regard to locating animals, assessing received levels, capturing animal movement, inferring behaviors, fusing data across individuals, and fusing data across different types of detection devices. Qualified candidates should receive a PhD in statistics or a closely related field prior to start of the position. Ideal candidates will have a background in spatial and spatio-temporal statistics, experience with multi-level modeling, and comfort with Bayesian inference and computation. Teaching opportunities may be available if desired. Starting date can be from January 1, 2019 but no later than June 30, 2019.

Interested candidates should submit a CV, letters of reference and a statement of research interest to http://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/12257. Inquiries should be sent to Professor Gelfand at alan@stat.duke.edu.
