Description: The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University ( is seeking candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the in the area of high power intense and ultraintense laser material research and laser technology development. Appointment is anticipated at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor; tenure will be possible based on experience, research track record and technical accomplishments. Appointment at the rank of Professor will also be considered when warranted. The department seeks to develop significant programs in ultrashort pulse laser material interaction, including non-linear optics, relativistic laser material interaction and particle acceleration, including building high power intense lasers from visible, near-IR and mid-IR wavelengths.  The candidate should establish an independent research program in high power high intensity laser materials interaction by building a unique laboratory and win external funds, along with teaching undergraduate and graduate level classes at normal load as the department requires. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain active sponsored research programs, teach core undergraduate and/or graduate courses and be an active participant in the international optics and materials communities.

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree or equivalent degree in MSE, ECE or Physics and extensive past experience in ultrashort pulse laser material interaction. Demonstrable past experience in generating independent externally funded research, advising PhD and undergraduate students, working in collaboration with researchers in multi-disciplinary fields from DoD labs and universities is highly desired. Research leadership is expected including the ability to attract significant federal funding and industrial partnerships to sustain a vibrant research program. Additionally, the candidate should have evidence of being able to work cooperatively and collegially to advance research and teaching programs with greatest efficiency and highest impact. The anticipated start date for this position is August 2019.
