Application Title: Quantum Computation Applications in Particle, Nuclear and Condensed-Matter Physics
Application Type:Postdoctoral
Location:College Park, Maryland 20742, United States [map]
Subject Area: Physics
Appl Deadline:2018/11/30 (posted 2018/10/15, listed until 2019/04/15)

UMD faculty Davoudi and Swingle invite applications for two or more postdoctoral positions at the University of Maryland, College Park, focused on the interface between quantum information science, quantum field theory, nuclear physics, and quantum matter. The positions include the possibility of collaboration with scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and elsewhere as part of a Quantum Computation Applications Team (QCAT) funded by the Department of Energy’s Office of Advanced Computing Research (ASCR). There is particular interest in near-term quantum devices, hybrid quantum-classical simulation, and applications to nuclear physics and quantum matter. Experience with near-term quantum devices and quantum computing platforms and algorithms is highly desired although it is not a requirement. Applicants with a diverse background (high-energy physics, nuclear physics, condensed matter and many-body physics, quantum information science and classical and quantum computational sciences) will be considered but they must demonstrate an interest in the aforementioned areas and be able to develop quickly the knowledge and the skills relevant to the focus of this call.

The term of positions is two years with the possibility of up to two (one year) renewals. The post-doc researcher will work at the new Physical Sciences Complex on the campus of UMD, with a close proximity to a strong and diverse community of faculty, fellows and researchers at the Maryland Center for Fundamental Physics (MCFP), Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) and Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS) at the UMD.

Positions are open until filled. The start date for positions could be as early as Spring 2019. Later start dates can be negotiated. In addition to salary and benefits, the positions come with a modest fund to cover research-related expenditures. Please submit a cover letter, a CV including a list of your publications, and a research statement and arrange for three recommendation letters to be submitted through AJO. Your cover letter must state your particular areas of interest and expertise and their relevance to the positions described. If you have any questions regarding the positions, you may contact Prof. Davoudi at and Prof. Swingle at
