Subject Area: Physics / Gravitational Theory
Appl Deadline:2019/01/07 (posted 2018/11/06)
Position Description:

The Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ITP-CAS) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) would like to announce an opening for a joint postdoctoral associate position.

We are searching for a candidate in the broad area of Gravitational Wave Theory, in particular: (i) developing strategies for testing general relativity, studying black-hole/compact-object physics, and exploring the early universe, using gravitational-wave observations, (ii) exploring new physics beyond standard model by using the gravitational wave detections, and (iii) exploring science cases for future ground- and space-based gravitational-wave detectors, and (iv) exploring how quantum optomechanics can be used to improve sensitivity of future ground-based gravitational-wave detectors.

This postdoc position will be based in Beijing, China, and funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, but the postdoc will be able to visit the Caltech for 3 months each year.

The ITP-CAS ( is the largest and the top theoretical physics institute in China, with roughly more than 40 faculties. Members of the institute cover a broad spectrum of research interests, ranging from high-energy physics, gravitational physics and cosmology, condensed matter physics, quantum information, and biophysics. Located at Zhongguancun and in close proximity to top universities and many other CAS institutes, the Institute has a lively and higherly interactive academic environment; it has a very active visitor program, and hosts several international conferences each year.

The non-Chinese can also apply for Fellowships of Young International Scientists in CAS, which includes other benefits like extra salary and extra fundings.

The position is guaranteed for at least two years (with a very high possibility to extend to three years). Candidates should submit the following materials via AJO: 1) CV; 2) Research Statement; 3) Three Reference Letters; 4) List of Publications. Any questions regarding this position should be addressed to with email subject "PD_joint”.

Review of applications will begin on 7th Jan 2019 and will continue until the positions are filled. The starting time for this position can be as early as possible.
