Associate in Research for Laboratory Management and Image-Guided Robotic Surgery System Development at Duke University Institution: Duke University, Biomedical Engineering Department Experience required: BS in Engineering A motivated and highly organized engineer is sought to provide engineering and laboratory management support to an active university research laboratory developing advanced medical imaging technology, augmented/virtual reality medical visualization technology, and image-guided robotic surgery technology. Skills are required in laboratory organization and management, mechanical design (Solidworks) and computer programming (MATLAB, python, C++). Specific duties include: a. (40%) Laboratory management duties including purchasing (specifying equipment and supplies, negotiating with vendors, placing orders, delivery verification, receipt handling, coordination with department staff), assisting PI and graduate students with purchasing and travel, assisting with weekly group meeting coordination (coordinating schedule of presentations, room reservations, A/V, managing catering). b. (10%) Serve as laboratory and laser safety officer. c. (40%) Support ongoing research in advanced imaging system development, augmented/virtual reality visualization, and robotic surgery including mechanical modeling in Solidworks, optical design in Zemax (can be learned on the job), design/construction of hardware, computer interface design and programming, and assistance in preparation of regulatory applications (IRB, FDA). d. (10%) Assist in preparation of grant applications and research results (powerpoint, posters, manuscripts). This position requires skills and dedication to constructive interactions with scientific staff (graduate students, postdocs) and physician collaborators. Position involves supporting extensive collaborative activities with Duke Medical School faculty, including conducting collaborative animal and human subjects research studies at Duke Hospital and Duke BME.
