The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. The Southwest York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program partners with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua and Steuben Counties, Cornell University Cooperative Extension and faculty to provide educational programs for the commercial dairy, livestock and field crops industries, using research-based information to improve the productivity and profitability of these industries in New York State.

Primarily, the objectives of the Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program are to maintain and improve the competitiveness and profitability of the New York dairy and livestock industries in a regional and national market; evaluate new technologies and management practices through applied research; assist in the adoption and implementation of appropriate technologies; improve the quality of dairy and livestock products available to consumers; and to reduce financial, legal, labor and environmental risks.

Focus of the position:

Provide leadership for planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs that address producer identified needs and opportunities with emphasis on dairy management for commercial dairy producers. The program will include but is not limited to: nutrition, reproductive management, milk quality, facilities, dairy record analysis, financial management and business planning, diverse production practices, (i.e., organic, rotational grazed, etc.), forage production and management, and dairy marketing policy. Plan and implement educational programs utilizing a variety of methods. Deliver one-on-one consultations with key producers and industry partners related to program initiatives and available resources.

The job duties include:

  • Providing producers and industry with a framework to analyze production and management alternatives and to maximize profit opportunities based on emerging best-management practices.
  • Working with farms to analyze management strategies to expand production and profitability.
  • Initiating and conducting appropriate applied research and field demonstrations with both regional and statewide implications in production and economics of commercial dairy production as an educational outreach strategy.
  • Supporting efforts in planning and implementing of regional and statewide events and conferences directly related to Cornell, Cooperative Extension or related collaborators.
  • Preparing quarterly reports, impact statements, and yearly success stories on program progress and accomplishments.
  • Communicating evaluation results, findings, and make recommendations to program partners and funders.
  • Supporting Cornell University and Cooperative Extension system-wide initiatives through participation in program work teams, ad-hoc committees and advisory groups.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities, conferences and workshops appropriate to program and personal skill enhancement.

This position is full-time and will be located in the CCE Steuben County Office. This is a three-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Agriculture from an accredited institution with a major in Dairy Science, Dairy Management, Dairy Nutrition or closely associated fields.
  • 2+years of relevant work experience in Agribusiness, Dairy Management, Cooperative Extension, or closely related fields. 
  • Experience in conducting, interpreting, evaluating and communicating the results of applied research.
  • Knowledge of the philosophy, objectives and operation of an informal education system such as Cornell Cooperative Extension.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, theory, and research in the economics of commercial production and business management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one-on-one settings; working effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.
  • Proven organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to define, conduct and interpret applied research and demonstration projects.
  • Successful experience obtaining new funding including grants and industry support.
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Fundamental competence utilizing current technology as a management and program delivery tool (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Internet and Social Media).
  • Appreciation of Agriculture as a business and as a lifestyle.
  • Creativity, energy, motivation and positive enthusiasm.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as essential job functions require.
  • Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework in Animal and Crop Sciences, Marketing, Labor Management, Adult Education, and Communications.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Successful experience obtaining new funding including grants and industry support.
  • Knowledge and experience in current and emerging issues, production practices and business management related to the dairy industry in New York.
