Teaching Postdoctoral Associate
 School of Integrative Plant Science
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Cornell University Ithaca, New York

The School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS) at Cornell University invites applicants for two full-time Teaching Postdoctoral Associates with interest in developing skills and experience in university teaching, coaching faculty on active learning practices, assessing impacts of active learning methods, and participating in discipline-based education research.

These positions are part of a Cornell-wide initiative to shift the undergraduate curriculum toward active learning approaches; the wide range of participating departments is summarized here: http://news.cornell.edu/stories/2019/02/active-learning-initiative-funds-nine-projects.

Specifically, the postdocs will play a key role in enhancing the active learning within the 10 core courses in the plant science curriculum and coaching SIPS faculty in adoption and assessment of active learning in non-core courses. The Teaching Postdoctoral Associates will be appointed for a one-year period with the possibility of annual extensions for up to five years.

The successful candidates will collaborate with faculty to formulate learning objectives, develop active learning-based curriculum components that align with the learning objectives, provide feedback on course teaching practices, and assess learning gains, with a goal of publishing results in refereed journals. The discipline-based education research community is growing at Cornell; it is an exciting time to be involved. Academic units throughout campus are hiring teaching postdocs as a part of the university’s Active Learning Initiative. Postdocs would have the opportunity to engage with the Center for Teaching Innovation, participate in weekly seminars, and connect with the larger Cornell community.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in a life science discipline, with some formal training in education.
  • Should have excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, team building and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in developing active learning curricula and in assessing the learning consequences of pedagogical innovation is highly desirable.

Terms of Appointment:

This is a 1-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The anticipated start date for the appointment is approximately July 1, 2019 (start date is negotiable) and applications will be reviewed starting on April 15th.

Applications To apply:

Candidates should submit their CV, a statement of teaching philosophy/experience, a statement of research experience, and the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of three individuals who can serve as references and a statement of contribution to diversity, equity, and inclusion via the website https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/13303
