Information Technology (IT) is the division of the Graduate Center responsible for media, voice, video, and data systems and services. The mission of this unit is to promote, facilitate, and support the effective use of technology in the learning process, in instruction and research, and in processing and accessing institutional information.

The ASRC invites applications for a Research Computing Engineer to administer its Research Computing Infrastructure. The ASRC Research Computing Infrastructure supports exciting research projects across these initiatives and addresses dynamic and challenging computational problems. This position offers a unique opportunity to interface with scientists at the ASRC and with computing engineers at the Graduate Center to help accelerate a portfolio of world-class scientific research programs.

Under the direction of the Director of Systems Services and in coordination with the ASRC Initiatives, with latitude for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, the Research Computing Engineer has operational and leadership responsibility for the development and management of the Graduate Center research-supporting infrastructure at the ASRC.

Duties include but are not limited to:

- Provides the ASRC Initiatives with the research-supporting infrastructure to help maintain cutting edge research; provides support for research-specific resources including CPU and GPU based high performance computing clusters, and large dataset storage and transfer; Supports the ASRC research community needs for a prompt and dynamic management of the Research Computing Infrastructure; - Directs the evaluation of new and emerging computational technologies, assists in the planning of the deployment of information technology systems, directs the design and implementation of new research-supporting infrastructure services, and integrates new technologies into the existing CUNY and external IT Infrastructure; - Assists with vendor management and feasibility studies in support of the IT acquisition needs of the ASRC research community; provides solutions to user questions and other queries such as connectivity problems, performance issues, functionality, outages, etc.; collaborates with IT staff in problem resolution, preventive maintenance, and corrective actions; - Leads complex day-to-day operational activities for maintaining the software and core-processing environment of the ASRC initiatives, including patching, backups, configuration, updating, and documentation, to ensure continuous and stable operation of computational research. Utilizes available tools to monitor performance and respond appropriately; - Reviews and analyzes the testing of systems and infrastructure to ensure completeness of controls, adherence to standards, security, completion of documentation, quality of output and efficiency of systems, supports and ensures SOX, HIPAA, and ITIL compliance within the IT infrastructure; - Participates in detailed strategic planning activities; monitors and reports on progress toward goals and objectives, manages service requests and problem resolution, and participates in the weekly Change Management meetings; - Functions as a member of the Systems Services leadership team; works cooperatively and collaboratively; communicates openly, clearly and frequently; maintains close communication with the Director of System Services and the ASRC Initiatives; - Performs other duties as assigned.

GENERAL DUTIES

I.T. Senior Associates perform highly complex professional work in technology-related disciplines. While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Senior Associates perform a range of work in development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar functions depending on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report. Work tasks include diagnosing, evaluating, overseeing and resolving highly complex projects. They have wide latitude for independent initiative and judgment and may serve in lead roles on complex programs or projects, and/or serve as a direct supervisor of a unit or group. I.T. Senior Associates should demonstrate mastery of one or more technology-related disciplines, decision-making ability in situations related to those disciplines, and be able to serve as a resource in these areas. They may contribute to decisions on I.T. policies and technical standards. This job is in CUNY's Classified Civil Service. IT Senior Associate

Qualifications:

1. High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent 2. An equivalent of ten years of experience post-high school that can be met by one of the following: ten years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology related position; an Associate's degree plus eight years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus six years of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position 3. Demonstrated English Language proficiency 4. A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions. This title has three levels. In addition to the minimum qualifications above, To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

A preferred candidate should have:

- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a science discipline. - Significant experience with high-end research computing and troubleshooting computing problems. - Demonstrated expertise in high performance computing, high speed networks, data storage systems, and cloud computing. - Working knowledge of Linux/Unix, programming languages, and scientific and mathematical libraries and packages; experience with scientific software is desirable. - Campus-level experience in planning and supporting research cyberinfrastructure; experience in a major research university setting. - Strong leadership skills, technical acumen, and critical thinking to build strong collaboration within diverse teams of internal and external technical professionals. - Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and apply new ideas, technologies and processes when appropriate to customer and service outcomes. - Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively to technical and non-technical staff, senior professionals and upper-level administrators; ability to communicate in technical terms with scientists about goals and techniques used in research.
