Director of Center for High Energy X-ray Sciences (CHEXS) at CHESS

Senior Research Associate (2 positions)

Main Function: MSN-C and CHEXS are partner programs making use of the x-ray facilities of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). MSN-C is supported by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and CHEXS is supported by the National Science Foundation. The MSN-C and CHEXS Directors have responsibility for oversight of the scientific and technical programs, facility management, operations and budget, the user program, external and internal academic relations, industrial relations, and other tasks delegated by the Principal Investigators (PI). The Directors reports to the Associate Director of CHESS. The initial appointments are for five years with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities include:

- Oversee scientific programs by leading a team of staff scientists and identifying scientific priorities, coordinating resources to accomplish scientific goals, reporting and communicating research accomplishments, and helping to shape future programs.

- Organize personnel and equipment resources to ensure that they are used properly, safely, equitably, and within the charter of the facility.

- Build and sustain a portfolio of laboratory and research funding. Assist the PIs in obtaining funding for the facility by drafting, writing, and providing input for proposals to federal, state, and private sources.

- Provide periodic reports to the PIs, users, committees and sponsors on the status of the facility. Prepare and present such reports to the boards, committees, and sponsors as needed.

- Develop short- and long-term plans for the facility. Carry out current policies and programs established by the PIs and the External Advisory Committee; work towards program growth by helping the PIs identify programs, resources, and funding opportunities and requirements.

Knowledge/Experience Requirements:

PhD or equivalent degree in a field of science or engineering. 10+ years of research and leadership experience demonstrating exceptional achievement. High level of organizational ability, supervisory skills, technical knowledge of the equipment and diverse research that occurs in the facility, and ability to communicate persuasively. Experience in academia or industry related to particle science or engineering is required together with experience in supervising personnel. Capable of adapting to the changing needs of a research environment. Able to receive direction and to communicate effectively across all research groups in the laboratory. Must work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment.
