Senior Extension Associate Position

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business invites applications for a full-time position as the Associate Dean of External Relations with start date of July 1, 2019.

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business includes three schools: the School of Hotel Administration (SHA), the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management (Dyson), and the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (Johnson). The college delivers undergraduate, graduate, and professional business programs and initiatives creating collaborative, comprehensive business management practices with roughly 240 faculty, 900 staff and more than 3,200 students. 

The Associate Dean for External Relations will continue to advance the SC Johnson College of Business as a top-tier workplace for faculty and staff through the oversight and management of corporate relationships, global strategy and partnerships, non-degree external and executive education and collaboration with Centers and Institutes. In addition to leading and coordinating these functions, this role will liaison with the College’s career services and placement efforts as well as alumni affairs and development. He/she will lead the strategy for all external associations and partnerships for the College that enhance the reputation and revenue profile.

The role requires a bold, methodical and innovative leader, with the highest level of integrity, who brings proven management experience, as well as a progressive approach to developing deep industry connections and relationships in support of the college’s mission. The position will be a skilled relationship builder, both internally to the college, across key stakeholders within the University and externally with corporate engagement. It will be critical for this role to understand a complex, multi-stakeholder, matrix structured organization that has centralized and decentralized multi-campus operations. The Associate Dean will oversee several non-academic areas within the College enhancing the collaboration between the three schools.

Reporting to the Dean of the SC Johnson College of Business, this role will also serve on the Dean’s senior leadership team. Critical success factors for this position include strategic thinking, international relations, contract management and negotiations, effective communication skills, strong technology competencies, integrity, innovative practices and the ability to problem solve in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities of this role include:

Administration of Corporate Engagement:

  • Create the vision in how the SC Johnson College of Business engages with industry.
  • Lease the Corporate Partnership efforts to raise fundraising revenue with a strong emphasis on corporate partner acquisition and retention, brand awareness development regionally and nationally, and, in partnership with alumni affairs and development, expand fundraising campaigns. 
  • Meet regularly with members of faculty, academic administration, and other key institutional leaders to stay informed of College priorities, and to identify and respond to opportunities for increasing corporate engagement and support. Engage with faculty to enhance and expand existing research collaborations with corporations as we as identify, cultivate and executive new ones.
  • Liaise with Student Services to build and enhance relationships with Corporate Partners in order to excel in student placement, internships, projects and trips. 
  • Serve as lead contact in helping faculty to develop relationships with external organizations in support of their research.      

      International Strategic Planning, Development & Execution:   

  • Provide direction and expertise in leading the design, development and execution of global strategies aligned with university and college objectives, mission, vision and values. Oversee current initiatives and programs (primarily in Brazil, Canada, China, India and Mexico) while developing a long-range strategy that will deliver a diverse set of programs in new ways that reflect the dynamism and diversity of customer and student needs. 
  • Lead teams to build client relationships in NYC, New York State and across the Americas. Develop and lead a strong portfolio of mutually beneficial business relationships, which enhances client talent development and business knowledge needs. In conjunction with the marketing and communications department, create a focused plan for communicating the College’s vision and needs for internationalization. Develop strategic cultivation and build strong relationships with current, prospective and new international partners.
  • Resolve difficult and highly complex situations requiring the interpretation of regulations, policy, and practice. Serve as the expert in contract reviews and negotiations for the College (partnering with Council’s Office and Global Operations Office for the university).                                                                

Strategy Development and Execution of Non Degree Executive Education: 

  • Responsible for the leadership of all executive education non-degree programs, including custom executive education, online courses and certificate programs that enhance both the reputation and revenue profile of the school.
  • Hire, develop and lead a sales staff to grow a profitable business. This role will also work with the Associate Dean of Marketing to develop the marketing programs to support sales efforts. The goal is to significantly grow this business.
  • Review and authorize all contracts (partnering with Council’s Office and Global Operations Office for the university) and be ultimately responsible for all client pricing models. Coordinate with operational department staff to create better systems and utilization of data to create strong key performance indicators (KPIs) for the department.

Centers & Institutes Support:

  • Support SC Johnson College of Business Centers & Institutes, ensuring the programming, events and activities are aligned with the overall vision and mission for the College. Review and approves annual plans and contracts.
  • Support staff and faculty leaders in helping each unit achieve financial stability and viability for a long-term presence within the College without institutional subsidies.

Grants and Contracts: 

  • Represent the college and build relationships with federal and state agencies, foundations, public officials, associations, and other courses of research funding for our faculty. 
  • Work with college leadership to understand areas of research priority and identifying funding opportunities. After grant or contract is secured, partner with administrative departments to ensure effective processes are in place for compliance and management.
  • Stay informed about changing regulation/policy. Partner with the Office of Sponsored Funds to understand the university’s policies, procedures and programs.


Required qualifications for this position include a master’s degree in business administration, international relations, law or a related discipline or 10-15 years of equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven success with corporate relations and distance learning techniques is a must. The position requires proven leadership in managing large, complex contracts and dealing with senior executives. The successful candidate should have a proven ability to work effectively with a broad and diverse population, including students, staff and faculty. Proven clear and effective written and verbal communication skills are required. S/he should have demonstrated effective leadership skills and teamwork philosophy. Effective supervisory and financial management skills are a must.

Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. degree with experience in higher education management or 10-15 years of equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven success leading complex and diverse organizations is a plus. The ideal candidate will have experience recruiting and managing staff including those who work in other countries. S/he would ideally have experience in collaboration with academic and industry-engaged centers & institutes and track record in administering and managing grants and contracts. A record of academic publication would be ideal.
