Duke Program in American Grand Strategy (AGS)


Occupational Summary 
This position will be responsible for the development, delivery, and management of one undergraduate course on Intelligence Studies during the academic spring semester of 2020 at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University.

Background Info 
The AGS program seeks to create the next generation of leaders through interactive learning opportunities. Such opportunities include direct interaction with senior policy-makers, crisis simulations, staff rides, and a captstone one-semester course. This position is responsible contributing to the AGS mission by delivering a “feeder” course to interested students (sophomore and junior undergraduates) who demonstrate interest in the capstone course or an interest, more broadly, in the intelligence or national security fields.

Work Performed 
A detailed description of functional areas and tasks follows: 

Course Responsibilities
  •  Develop Curriculum (readings, syllabus, guest speakers, writing requirements, examinations)
  •  Coordinate course scheduling, course approval, and cross-listing through the Sanford registrar
  •  Load course content on Sakai Learning Management System and employ Sakai for course management 
  •  Identify and schedule guest lecturers for class interaction, as necessary 
  •  Schedule and hold office hours for student access
  •  Generate interim and final grades as required
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Individual must have at least a master’s degree and formal professional training in the field of intelligence (collection, analysis, or program management). 

EXPERIENCE: 
Work requires ten years of experience in the intelligence field along with teaching experience at the university level. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes: 
  • Capacity to interact well with undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and guest lecturers 
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in intelligence history and studies
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills 
  • Solid understanding of information technologies • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Willingness to work with a wide variety of people
  • The ability to work with varying degrees of management oversight, both independently and closely supervised
