The Special Formats Description Librarian is responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of special formats resources with an emphasis on musical scores, sound recordings, and cartographic materials.  S/He keeps abreast of standards and demonstrates a commitment to customer service and to collaborative work in support of discovery and access through team and departmental efforts and through active participation in projects.  This position reports to the Team Lead, Monographic Original Cataloging in the Resource Description Department.

Responsibilities

  • Applies bibliographic metadata standards and principles to provide effective access to library collections, primarily focused on music performing arts and cartographic resources, e.g., sheet maps, atlases, and GIS datasets.
  • Contributes to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, including NACO, SACO, and BIBCO; creates and enhances authority records, performing related research as necessary; establishes and recommends subject headings for inclusion in the subject authority file and/or classification schedules, in collaboration with the Library of Congress.
  • Uses library technology and encoding/structural standards to perform work related to the enhancement or creation of metadata. This may include: bibliographic utilities and knowledge bases (e.g., OCLC); linked data principles (e.g., RDF); identity management (e.g., LCNAF/ISNI); and emerging data models (e.g., BIBFRAME).
  • Works collaboratively with other catalogers and metadata stakeholders to make resources discoverable and usable; contributes to planning and implementing cataloging activities.
  •  Designs, implements, and manages workflows for cataloging music and cartographic resources; provides consultation or performs liaison duties to help solve technical problems, interacts collaboratively on or leads projects, and exchanges information with library staff within and outside of Technical Services.
  • Actively participates in strategic planning relating to discovery, access, retrieval, and management of objects in ILS, discovery, and digital repository systems. Advises on the application of appropriate current and emerging cataloging/metadata schema to facilitate access to digital resources and physical collections.
  • Demonstrates professional engagement through continuous growth and development, active participation in professional organizations, and service to library, the University, and the community.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

Required:  MLS from an ALA accredited program or a combination of relevant education and experience. 

Preferred:  Advanced degree in musicology, music composition, or cartography. 

Experience:

Required

  • 1-3 years of experience performing complex copy or original cataloging
  • Knowledge of musical notation
  • Willingness and aptitude to build expertise in conceptual knowledge of maps and GIS standards for cataloging of cartographic materials
  • Experience with the use and application of RDA or other bibliographic description standards, subject analysis, and application of a standard classification system
  • Experience with MARC21 bibliographic and authority formats
  • Knowledge of Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) standards and programs
  • Reading knowledge of one language other than English
  • Familiarity with at least one library utility and integrated library system (ILS)
  • Evidence of analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, including the ability to work collegially and collaboratively within and across organizations
  • Experience contributing to or leading short and long-term projects

Preferred: 

  • Experience cataloging scores and/or sound recordings
  • Experience cataloging maps and/or GIS data
  • Working knowledge of OCLC Connexion and an ILS such as Ex Libris’ Aleph
  • Experience contributing to Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) programs, such as NACO
  • Knowledge of BIBFRAME and other linked data initiatives; knowledge of non-MARC metadata standards
  • Reading knowledge in two or more languages other than English

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds and unpack, shelve and shift large quantities of library materials
  • Frequent bending, crouching, stooping
  • Normal office environment

Salary and Benefits

Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 13 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
