The Institute of Biotechnology at Cornell University is
seeking a Director for the new Flow Cytometry Facility within the
Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC). This core was recently established
through a $2,000,000 investment by the Provost and the Deans of various
colleges, reflecting the campus commitment to state-of-the-art core
facilities. In line with this significant investment
of funds, the Institute is looking to expand personnel resources to operate
and maintain the suite of new instrumentation located at a main facility in the
Biotechnology Building and a satellite facility at the College of Veterinary
Medicine. The new Flow Cytometry
Facility includes an array of recently purchased sorters (FACSAria Fusion,
FACSMelody, Sony MA900) and analyzers (Symphony A3, two ThermoFisher Attune
NxTs). The Flow Cytometry Facility is
part of an innovative and collaborative group of core facilities within the
BRC, with a mission to catalyze and promote research in the life sciences. The Director is responsible for leadership,
management, and vision of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility, and leads the continued
growth and technological advancement of this new facility in line with ongoing
campus-wide improvements in infrastructure and resources. The Director collaborates
with senior members of faculty, a faculty advisory board, and Institute
directors to ensure the upward trajectory of the core, in
conjunction with the university’s significant faculty recruitment efforts as
part of Cornell’s “Radical Collaborations” initiative (http://provost.cornell.edu/academic-initiatives/radical-collaboration/) and the newly established Center for Immunology (http://news.cornell.edu/stories/2019/02/cornell-creates-multicollege-center-immunology). The Director is responsible
for expanding a robust user community among faculty researchers, and keeping
services and instrumentation at the cutting edge of flow cytometry science.
Position requirements include a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, or a related field. The Director must have extensive knowledge of and more than five years of experience in flow cytometry and cell sorting instrumentation and related technologies, protocols, strategies, sample preparation, and data analysis. This position is an initial three-year term non-faculty academic appointment, with the possibility of extension contingent upon continued funding. The Institute of Biotechnology is a dynamic hub for life sciences research at Cornell University. The Institute (http://www.biotech.cornell.edu) offers cutting edge biotechnologies, expertise in applications, technology testing and development and consultation for life sciences researchers at Cornell University and outside institutions. The Institute houses the Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC), which offers shared core facilities services to catalyze and promote life sciences research, and is involved with many intercampus initiatives and multi-institutional collaborations. In addition to Flow Cytometry, the BRC includes core facility operations in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Imaging, Proteomics, Metabolomics, and Biotechnology Development. The Institute also administers the Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) in the Life Sciences to assist life science researchers in the development of biotechnologies with commercial potential in partnership with New York State industries, and the Kevin M. McGovern Family Center for Venture Development in the Life Sciences, a state-of- the-art business incubator for emerging biotechnology companies.
