The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.

The department is searching for a Research Associate to work In collaboration with the PI to provide a high level of leadership for an active research group conducting farm through consumer research and extension on dairy product quality and safety. The incumbent will supervise technicians, research support specialists and have extensive contact with graduate students, informally guiding their research. The incumbent is expected in collaboration with the PI to, develop and carry out a research program on: i) the effects of spoilage microorganisms including sporeforming bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi on finished dairy product quality, ii) the transmission of spoilage microorganisms and pathogens from environmental niches into dairy products at the farm and processing levels, iii) development of methods for evaluating raw and finished dairy product quality. Responsibilities will include planning, conducting and reporting on qualitative and quantitative research; dissemination and application of research findings, reporting of results and preparation of manuscripts and developing research proposals for external funding. The incumbent will be expected to have significant interaction with, and impact on, stakeholders across the dairy industry continuum including producers, processors, regulators and other researchers including production and processing extension agencies, in collaboration with the PI.

The incumbent is expected to develop and direct a strong research program in dairy foods microbiology, in collaboration with the PI. Specific responsibilities will include (i) develop and oversee research projects, in collaboration with the PI (30%); (ii) supervise graduate students and technicians (20 %); (iii) prepare manuscripts and help with manuscript preparation (20%); (iv) prepare and submit research proposals for funding by USDA, National Dairy Council (NDC), New York Farm Viability Institute (NYFVI) and other agencies and foundations to support the incumbent’s research and activities (10%); (v) provide subject matter and technical expertise to dairy industry stakeholders to assist in troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of quality related issues (10%) and (v) represent the research group by attending and presenting at scientific conferences, seminars, workshops, and meetings (10%). Opportunities exist for the development of an independent research program.

This is a 3 year appointment, pending successful performance and continued funding.  The position is full-time.

Requirements:

·         Ph.D. in food science, microbiology, dairy science or related fields and extensive experience in dairy microbiology, dairy production and processing and/or food microbiology

·         Two to three year’s experience in dairy microbiology research as it pertains to quality and safety of raw and processed dairy products.

  • Experience working in an extension capacity with both dairy producers and processors

  •   Experience supervising and leading a diverse team including technicians, research support specialists and graduate students and excellent organizational skills are a must.

  • Experience working successfully with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Prior experience as researcher (or equivalent) and a track record of independent research.

  • Record of publishing original research in peer-reviewed technical and scientific journals

  • Demonstrated ability in acquiring extramural funding to support sponsored research.

  • Must have a record of repeated success in conducting research in areas that will enhance the needs and mission of the research program.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 

  • Excellent quantitative and statistics skills.

  • A valid NYS driver’s license is also required.  Driver background check required.
