Professor of the Practice Assistant Chair in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Duke University

The Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Department is seeking applications for Professor of the Practice - Assistant Chair. The Professor of the Practice - Assistant Chair is a non-tenure track faculty member who focuses on administrative tasks and processes to advance the strategic, research and teaching missions of the department. The Assistant Chair works closely with the Department Chair, Associate Chair, and other faculty and staff inside and outside the department. Duties of the Assistant Chair include the following:

Critical Activities

• MS Programs. Serve as coordinator of the departmental Masters programs. Develop and implement focused MS tracks within ME and coordinate these tracks with related tracks in other departments and Pratt. Oversee recruiting and admissions. Advise MS students on course and career options. • Industrial Relations. Develop industrial internship opportunities, assist the Chair with the departmental advisory board, and generally facilitate visibility and interactions with industry. • Education and Outreach Support for Research Programs. Support and coordinate education and outreach efforts for large research programs.

Other Areas of Responsibility

• Assist with department visibility by pro-actively monitoring MEMS activities and providing updates for web presence, newsletters, marketing and publicity. • Assist with alumni relations and networking. • Manage student employees working in support of the tasks above. • Perform other projects as assigned by the Chair, including development of departmental reports and publications.

The successful candidate for Assistant Chair will have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related field and will be an energetic, self-motivated and organized person capable of furthering the departmental mission as outlined above. Experience in higher education, teaching or administration, is preferred.
