Summary

An individual with academic credentials (MA or Ph.D.) and not a degree candidate. Assists faculty members in research programs by participating in the research directly or in organizing a program under which the research is carried out. This classification is administered on Campus through the Office of the Provost and in the Medical Center through the Office of the Chancellor for Health Affairs. It is not subject to the Wage and Salary system.

Responsibilities Professor Field’s Research Manager supports her research portfolio, by working closely with Professor Field and co-PIs. The RM will also be responsible for identifying funding opportunities and leading the grant application process, including submission of applications. The RM will also manage Professor Field’s discretionary funding, providing accurate and timely monthly reports. The RM’s primary responsibilities include: (1) Performing and overseeing administrative tasks related to project management (70%) (2) Preparing grant proposals and IRB documentation (20%) a. The RM performs pre-award activities for the Field team to include assisting PIs in the development, preparation and submission of grant and contract proposals, collaborating with grant manager and ORS in ensuring all applications meet agency and university guidelines, and published time tables and deadlines, ensuring proposals are entered and routed in a timely manner for further review. b. The RM manages the IRB process start to finish for all projects and with all IRB institutions. (3) Managing administrative processes related to Dr. Field’s research and teaching to include: a. Managing field activities, including travel for Professor Field and other team members b. Overseeing recruitment and staffing for the research team, in collaboration with Economics Department Administrative Assistant and Administrative Manager c. Supervising domestic and field RAs (full time associates in research) d. Planning effort and salary for PIs and research team staff and students, budgeting and allocating discretionary and sponsored funding resources in support of project activities. i. Review effort/salary for all project personnel on sponsored and discretionary fund sources each month, providing updates to PIs and notifying grant manager of changes needed in a timely manner. ii. Review grant managers reconciliations and monthly financial reports to confirm effort and expenses on behalf of PIs (Professor Field and Kate Vyborny) iii. Review /reconcile expenses posting to discretionary funds every month with Professor Field e. Maintaining Professor Field’s CV, Other Support, biosketches and website f. Managing—and acting as Professor Field’s spokesperson—in communications with institution partners and other key stakeholders, including grant manager, Economics Department staff and other Duke Department staff. g. Managing Field Lab Suite space h. Managing communications and requests for recommendations and schedule for Professor Field. Education: Master’s or P.D. with at least 4 years of experience Desired Qualifications and Experience Applicants for the positions of RM should possess: • A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in economics, finance, public policy, or other related fields and should have strong quantitative skills (undergraduate/post-graduate training in finance, microeconomics, development economics, econometrics and statistics is preferred). • 3-4 years of relevant experience • Attention to detail and advanced writing and presentation skills for communicating policy lessons from academic papers in ways that policymakers understand, including clear, precise, non-technical writing, and creativity in presentation. • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills. • Quantitative skills with data management, econometrics, and knowledge of STATA or other data analysis software. • Valuable experience in managing teams and interacting with institutional partners. • Familiarity will grants management process, including drafting grant proposals and post-award management. • Strong interest in international development policy and research. • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and a team player. • Proven ability to handle several different projects/tasks at one time, successfully complete tasks assigned, and meet deadlines. A willingness to work hard, be self-motivated and learn will be essential for doing well in this position. Experience in managing teams and interacting with institutional partners strongly desired. • Experience in conducting field research in developing countries with a background in randomized evaluations is a plus. • Willingness to travel.
