Position Description:    

The DevLab@Duke is seeking to hire a Research Associate to support several innovative projects focused on the application of machine learning to the forecasting of democratic breakdowns, the closure of civic space, and the foreign policy behavior of authoritarian regimes. DevLab@Duke’s machine learning portfolio currently includes two large projects, and we are considering others. The Research Associate position will include technical, management and administrative tasks. Technical tasks could include anything from responding to donor requests for specific analyses to contributing to scraping data and natural language processing of it. The Research Associate will also provide administrative and management across the ML portion of DevLab’s research portfolio, which will include organizing group meetings, report writing, and organizing report delivery to clients and donors.

Successful candidates will collaborate with Professors Scott de Marchi and Erik Wibbels, as well other members of the DevLab, in an interdisciplinary environment. They will be expected to work with lab associates to provide timely input to development practitioners affiliated with the DevLab —including donors, implementers and evaluators—at all stages of project conceptualization, design, implementation, evaluation and reporting.

Responsibilities will include: Contributions to the technical portions of the project. Conducting desk research, drafting and editing documents and reports. Providing administrative and logistical support to project teams, including project work planning and reporting as needed. Developing and updating a DevLab Machine Learning website page and drafting quarterly blogs. Facilitating communication/collaboration between DevLab clients, Principal Investigators, Postdocs, grad students and research analysts. Organizing and scheduling meetings and project check-ins associated with various DevLab projects. Monitoring program budgets and reconciling expenditures. Proposal development and concept notes for contract and grant applications, as needed.

Qualifications: Prospective candidates are expected to have done graduate work and completed an MA in one or more of these areas: oInternational Development oEconomics oPolitical Science oStatistics oComputer Science oPublic Policy •Coursework and/or demonstrated research/professional experience with data analytics is required •Additional experience with visualization would be desirable, as would a background in both python and R. •Strong attention to detail. •Ability to follow through on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. •Excellent verbal communication and writing skills. •Project management or coordination experience is preferred.
