Chief, Division of Health Informatics and Implementation Science

Associate or Full Professor, Tenured or Tenure-Track

The Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences (PQHS) at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Medical School in Worcester, MA, is recruiting a tenured or tenure-eligible faculty member at the Associate or Full Professor level for Chief of the Division of Health Informatics and Implementation Science. Our collective vision is that PQHS is a powerhouse for promoting the best health and well-being for all through science, community-engagement, and education.

The Division of Health Informatics and Implementation Science strives to improve population health through the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions that utilize technology-assisted approaches. Division faculty are experts in cutting-edge study designs and a variety of quantitative and qualitative methodologies and use these approaches to conduct innovative research focused on how informatics applications, broadly construed (e.g., mobile applications, EHR/PHR-delivered interventions (care-team facing and patient-facing), application of natural processing and machine learning methodology), can be employed to promote health and transform the experience and delivery of health care. We seek qualified candidates who are established leaders in health informatics and/or implementation science; candidates who have a history of excellence in one area and of collaboration in the other are encouraged. Candidates should also have a history of receiving and maintaining an NIH-funded research program to : (1) further energize the vibrant cadre of scientists in the Division, (2) mentor junior faculty, fellows, students and other trainees, (3) extend existing collaborations across academic institutions and clinical health systems, and (4) envision creative new avenues for growth in the domains of health informatics and implementation science.

PQHS was founded in June, 2009 and currently has over 37 primary faculty members distributed across 4 Divisions: Health Informatics and Implementations Science; Biostatistics and Health Services Research; Epidemiology; and Preventive and Behavioral Medicine. PQHS also hosts a doctoral program in Clinical and Population Health Research, a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation degree program, and multiple NIH-funded training programs, including two programs in Implementation Science, and a methodology consulting and service unit, the Quantitative Methods Core. For 2018, the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research placed PQHS as third in the nation for NIH funding garnered by similar departments housed within US medical schools. We currently have more than $20 million in active NIH funding. UMass is a collaborative and dynamic institution that has held a Clinical and Translation Science Award since 2010; the Medical School now garners over $250 million dollars in annual extramural funding.  PQHS is a key driver of clinical and translational research at UMass. UMass Medical School is the academic partner of UMass Memorial Health Care and Baystate Health, the largest health care providers in Central and Western Massachusetts. This position brings the opportunity to build partnerships our partner clinical systems and clinical departments within UMass. In addition, this position includes an opportunity for a joint appointment at the Veterans Administration Center of Innovation in Health Services Research at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Health Administration (VA) Medical Center in Bedford, MA.  Joint appointment with VA offers opportunities for collaboration with VA informatics researchers nationwide at a pivotal moment, as VA prepares for nationwide implementation of their new EHR.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, educational experience, and contact information for five references to www.academicjobsonline.org.  Inquiries, but not application materials, may be directed to PQHS.faculty.search@umassmed.edu.
