Faculty Position in Experimental Particle Physics
Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Victoria

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of experimental particle physics, including accelerator and non-accelerator based research. In exceptional cases, an appointment at the Associate Professor level may be considered for candidates with appropriate experience. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2020.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy ( is a diverse research-intensive unit that is dedicated to providing outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs and fosters a collegial and collaborative environment. The Department has strong research efforts in particle and accelerator physics, astronomy and astrophysics, condensed matter physics, medical physics and ocean physics. The Department benefits from the services of very effective and dedicated staff.

The Department’s particle physics group, consisting of nine faculty members and two IPP Research Scientists, benefits from close links with the TRIUMF Laboratory and its staff; collectively they comprise the Victoria Subatomic Physics and Accelerator Research Centre (VISPA), which maintains leading research programs in physics at the energy frontier, precision experiments at B-factories, accelerator-based neutrino physics, and theoretical particle and astroparticle physics. Experimental particle physics faculty are currently members of the ATLAS, BaBar, Belle II, and T2K/HyperK collaborations, For more information about the research programs within VISPA, see


The successful candidate must have a PhD in experimental particle physics or equivalent, and postdoctoral or equivalent experience is desirable. They will be responsible for developing an independent and externally funded research program of international caliber, in an area that will enhance and/or complement the strengths of the UVic experimental particle physics group, and for teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will also share in the administrative responsibilities of the department, play an active role in the advising and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, and contribute to the collaborative, collegial and inclusive atmosphere of the department.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in research and teaching. Excellence in research is evidenced by peer reviewed publications/contributions of high impact and strong endorsements by referees of international standing. Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by communications skills, a statement on teaching submitted as part of the application, recommendation letters and a colloquium delivered during the on-site interview.
